A fault alarm on your Eaton 9PX is not the unit breaking down, it is the UPS telling you it needs attention. The 9PX is an online double-conversion UPS built to protect servers, network racks, medical devices and industrial controls, and it constantly monitors its batteries, load, temperature and supply. When something moves outside a safe window, it raises a named alarm on the LCD, changes the status LED and sounds an audible pattern.

Below are the six faults our technicians see most often on 9PX units in the field, in plain language, with the checks you can safely make yourself and the point at which you should stop and call for service. First, read the front panel and event log

Before you touch anything, read what the 9PX is actually reporting. The status LED gives you the headline: green is normal, orange means bypass or a warning, and red means an active fault. The audible pattern tells you the urgency, from a single beep every ten seconds in battery mode to a continuous alarm on a hard fault. For the exact condition, open the event log by pressing the menu button and scrolling to Control or Event Log. Each entry is timestamped. Write down the fault text and the time, because that single line is what lets a technician diagnose the unit without guessing.

1. Battery fault

This is the fault we see more than any other. A battery fault or a replace battery message usually means the 9PX ran its automatic self-test and found the battery string outside specification, either low voltage, reduced capacity or high impedance. On sealed lead-acid batteries that typically happens at three to five years, and sooner in a warm room.

What to check: confirm the battery connector is fully seated and any external battery breaker is closed, since a No battery message is often just a loose connection rather than a dead pack. If the unit reports low runtime but otherwise tests fine, leave it on utility power for up to 48 hours to fully recharge, then run the battery test again from the menu.

When to replace: if the test fails after recharging, the cartridge is at end of life and needs replacing. Heat is the main culprit here, because every 8 to 10 degrees Celsius above 25 degrees can roughly halve lead-acid battery life. 2. Overload

An overload alarm means the connected equipment is drawing more than the 9PX is rated to supply. The unit will tolerate a small overload only briefly before it protects itself by transferring to bypass or shutting down, and the bigger the overload, the less time you have.

What to do: unplug non-essential equipment to bring the load back under 80% and the alarm should clear. If your 9PX keeps hitting overload, the real fix is right-sizing rather than resetting. It usually means the load has grown past what the unit was specified for, and a larger 9PX or a better-matched model is the answer. 3. Unplanned bypass mode

If your 9PX shows bypass mode and you did not put it there, it has switched your equipment onto raw mains power because it could no longer support the load through its inverter. The important thing to understand is that your gear still has power, but it is no longer protected. If the mains drops now, everything goes down.

What to check: the usual triggers are an overload, an internal fault, or repeated automatic transfers. Clear any overload first, then read the event log for the underlying reason. If the unit returns to normal online operation once the overload is gone, you are fine. If it keeps falling back to bypass, or it went to bypass with no overload present, stop forcing it back and treat it as an internal fault that needs service.

4. Overtemperature

An overtemperature alarm means the 9PX has passed its internal or ambient temperature limit. UPS units run hot, and they rely on clear airflow to stay within spec.

What to check: make sure the front and rear vents are not blocked, that rack doors or nearby equipment are not trapping heat, and that the room cooling is actually working. In a sealed comms cupboard, an overtemperature alarm is often a room problem rather than a UPS problem. High heat does not just trip the alarm, it silently ages the battery, which is why a hot install so often ends up with an early battery fault as well. 5. Fan fault

A fan fault or fan lock means one of the cooling fans has seized or failed. This one matters because the fan is what keeps the power electronics within temperature, and a 9PX with a dead fan will usually drift into an overtemperature condition and drop to bypass before long.

What to do: the cooling fans are not a user-replaceable item on the 9PX, so a fan fault is a service call. Do not keep running the unit under load with a known fan failure. Book a technician to replace the fan before the heat causes a secondary fault.

6. Site wiring fault

A site wiring fault is the 9PX warning you that something is wrong with the circuit feeding it, most commonly reversed line and neutral or a missing earth at the outlet. This is not a fault inside the UPS.

What to do: this must be corrected by a licensed electrician in line with AS/NZS 3000. A reversed or unearthed supply is a genuine safety hazard, not just a UPS nuisance, so do not bypass the warning or try to work around it. When to stop and call a technician

You can safely handle the load and environment issues yourself: reduce an overload, clear blocked vents, reseat a battery connection, or call an electrician for a wiring fault. You should call a UPS technician when you see a battery fault that persists after recharging, a charger fault, a fan fault, an output short circuit, or anything that mentions the inverter, DC bus or an internal fault. A simple rule holds up well in practice: a red LED with a continuous alarm and a fault in the log is a service call, not a reset. Never open the chassis yourself, because a 9PX can hold a lethal voltage on its internal capacitors even when it is unplugged.
