Why Eaton UPS Systems
Eaton UPS systems are built around core technologies that consistently differentiate them in the Australian market. For buyers comparing Eaton against APC by Schneider Electric, the key differences are efficiency, battery management, paralleling architecture and cybersecurity compliance.
| Technology | What It Does | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| ABM (Advanced Battery Management) | Three-stage battery charging cycle instead of conventional constant-voltage float charging | Extends battery service life by up to 50 percent, reducing replacement frequency and total cost of ownership |
| HotSync Paralleling | Patented technology allowing multiple UPS units to operate in parallel for N+1 redundancy or increased capacity | No additional output switchgear or software licensing required for redundancy. Available on 9PX, 9PXM, 9155, 9355 and 93PM. |
| 3-Level Inverter (9PX) | Advanced inverter topology achieving up to 95% efficiency in double-conversion mode | 4 percentage points above the typical 91% competitor efficiency. Measurable electricity cost saving at scale. |
| Self-Powered Bypass (9PX, 9SX) | Independent power supply for bypass, separate from main UPS electronics | Bypass remains operational even if main UPS electronics or CPU fail. Most competitors in this range do not include this. |
| Gigabit Network Card | First UPS network card compliant with both UL and IEC cybersecurity standards | Required for government, healthcare and enterprise deployments with security procurement requirements. SNMP, Modbus, HTTPS. |
| LiFePO4 Lithium-Ion (9PX G2, 93PM) | Lithium iron phosphate batteries replacing VRLA lead-acid | Twice the service life of VRLA, 40 percent smaller footprint, 5-year warranty. LiFePO4 does not generate oxygen during thermal events. |
What is double-conversion online UPS? A double-conversion UPS (also called VFI -- Voltage and Frequency Independent) completely regenerates the output power from the battery inverter at all times. Connected equipment always runs on clean inverter power with zero transfer time during any mains disturbance. All Eaton 9E, 9SX, 9PX, 9PXM, 9155, 9355, 93PM and 9395 models are double-conversion online.

Eaton UPS FAQs
What is the best Eaton UPS for a server room?
For most Australian server rooms, the Eaton 9PX is the recommended choice. It delivers online double-conversion protection with zero transfer time, up to 95% efficiency, HotSync paralleling for N+1 redundancy, and the Eaton Gigabit Network Card for cybersecurity-compliant remote management. For loads above 11kVA single phase, the 9PXM (4 to 20kVA modular) or 9155 (8 to 15kVA) are appropriate. For three-phase server rooms above 25kVA, the 93PM modular system is the standard data centre choice.
What is a double-conversion UPS and why does it matter?
A double-conversion online UPS completely regenerates the output power from the battery inverter at all times, so connected equipment always runs on clean inverter power with zero transfer time during any mains disturbance. This is the required topology for servers, medical equipment, telecommunications infrastructure and any equipment that cannot tolerate a momentary interruption. All Eaton 9E, 9SX, 9PX, 9PXM, 9155, 9355, 93PM and 9395 models are double-conversion online.
How long does an Eaton UPS battery last?
Eaton VRLA lead-acid batteries typically last 3 to 5 years in Australian conditions. Eaton's ABM charging system extends battery service life by up to 50% compared to conventional float charging. Eaton LiFePO4 lithium-ion batteries, available on the 9PX G2 and 93PM, have a design life of approximately 10 years with a 5-year warranty, roughly twice the service life of VRLA alternatives.
Why does my Eaton UPS keep beeping?
An Eaton UPS beeps to indicate a fault or status condition. Common causes include: battery on discharge (mains power lost or degraded), battery end-of-life warning, overload alarm, battery test running, or a communication fault with the network card. A continuous beep typically indicates the UPS is running on battery. A repeating short beep pattern usually indicates a battery fault or low battery. Check the LCD display for the specific alarm code. See our Eaton 9PX fault codes and troubleshooting guide or contact our service team.
What is the difference between the Eaton 9PX and the Eaton 9SX?
Both are double-conversion online UPS systems, but the 9PX is the flagship with significantly more features: 3-level inverter achieving up to 95% efficiency (versus approximately 91% for the 9SX), self-powered bypass, HotSync paralleling for N+1 redundancy, up to 4 external battery modules, and the Eaton Gigabit Network Card option. The 9SX is a capable unit at a lower price point (700VA to 3kVA) suited to less complex deployments.
Is Eaton the same as Powerware?
Yes. Eaton acquired Powerware in 2004 and rebranded the Powerware range under the Eaton name. The Eaton 9355 was previously the Powerware 9355. Legacy Powerware systems including the Powerware 9155, 9390 and 9395 are now serviced under the Eaton brand. Indigi Power and Cooling services and maintains legacy Powerware systems alongside current Eaton products and can assist with migration planning.
Does Eaton make a lithium-ion UPS?
Yes. Eaton offers LiFePO4 lithium-ion batteries on the 9PX G2 single-phase models (700VA to 6kVA) and the 93PM three-phase modular system. Eaton's LiFePO4 chemistry does not generate oxygen during thermal events, eliminating the ignition risk associated with some other lithium-ion chemistries. Lithium-ion Eaton UPS systems are 40% smaller than equivalent VRLA systems, lighter, and carry a 5-year battery warranty.
