Power-Sonic Batteries Australia

Power-Sonic batteries are sealed lead acid (SLA), AGM VRLA, deep cycle gel and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries built for UPS backup, fire, security, medical and standby power, with a range spanning 0.5Ah to over 200Ah in 2V, 4V, 6V and 12V. Indigi Power and Cooling supplies the Power-Sonic range across Australia as part of our critical power business, and can match the right chemistry and capacity to your UPS, alarm panel or off-grid system.

Power-Sonic has been a leading manufacturer of rechargeable batteries since 1970, with products sold in more than 70 countries. The rechargeable range covers valve regulated lead acid (VRLA), commonly called sealed lead acid (SLA), together with deep cycle gel, tubular gel and lithium iron phosphate technologies, plus matched chargers and accessories. Over 60 SLA models are available, so whatever the application there is a battery designed to suit the requirement.

As an Indigenous and Veteran-owned critical power and cooling specialist, Indigi Power and Cooling supplies Power-Sonic batteries alongside our UPS maintenance, installation and server room cooling services. That means you can source the batteries and the engineers who fit and commission them from a single Supply Nation and ICN Gateway registered supplier, backed by hubs in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

The Power-Sonic battery range

Power-Sonic organises its rechargeable batteries into distinct ranges, each engineered for a different balance of cost, cycle life and temperature tolerance. The table below summarises the main families and where each one fits.

Table: Power-Sonic rechargeable battery ranges and typical applications.
Range Technology Best for Typical capacity
PS / PSG General Purpose AGM VRLA / SLA UPS, fire and security panels, emergency lighting, medical devices 0.5Ah to 200Ah
UPS series High-rate AGM VRLA Uninterruptible power supplies needing high current in short bursts Model dependent
Deep Cycle Gel (DCG) Gelled electrolyte Tight spaces, higher temperatures, high vibration environments Model dependent
Tubular Gel Tubular plate gel Off-grid solar and energy storage needing long cycle life Model dependent
Lithium (LiFePO4) Lithium iron phosphate Weight-sensitive and high cycle-life applications Model dependent

Why choose Power-Sonic AGM VRLA batteries

The entire Power-Sonic AGM VRLA range shares a set of design features that make it a dependable choice for standby and light cyclic duty. The grid below sets out what matters most for critical power buyers.

Sealed and maintenance free

Valve regulated, spill-proof construction allows safe operation in any position. Gases produced during overcharge are recombined through an oxygen cycle, so there is no need to add electrolyte.

Valve regulated safety

One-way low-pressure self-sealing valves vent excess gas during severe overcharge, preventing dangerous expansion of the casing and improving safety.

Deep discharge recovery

Heavy duty lead calcium plates and balanced electrolyte give strong recovery from deep discharge in both cyclic and float applications.

Wide temperature range

Discharge from -40 to +60 degrees Celsius and charge from -40 to +50 degrees Celsius, suiting Australian conditions from Cairns to the alpine south.

Series and parallel flexibility

Batteries can be connected in series and parallel to build the voltage and capacity a system needs, and the same battery suits cyclic or standby use.

Certified and compliant

Approved for air transport with D.O.T., I.A.T.A. and F.A.A. certification, UL recognised, CE certified, and selected models carry VdS and CSIRO ActivFire approval for fire and security use.

Popular Power-Sonic 12V models

The 12V AGM range is the most widely specified for UPS and life-safety work. The table lists a representative selection of common capacities. Ask us for the full model list, including 2V, 4V and 6V blocks and front-terminal telecom formats.

Table: Representative Power-Sonic 12V sealed lead acid models and common uses.
Voltage Capacity Typical application
12V 1.2Ah to 5Ah Alarm panels, small emergency lighting, portable equipment
12V 7Ah to 9Ah Fire and security panels, small UPS, medical devices
12V 12Ah to 40Ah Larger UPS strings, access control, telemetry
12V 55Ah to 200Ah UPS battery banks, solar storage, telecom and utility standby

Applications

Power-Sonic rechargeable batteries serve as either the prime or standby power source across a broad spectrum of electronic and industrial applications, including:

  • Uninterruptible power supplies for server rooms and data centres. See our UPS maintenance and UPS battery pages.
  • Fire detection and alarm systems, where selected PS models are CSIRO ActivFire listed to AS 1603.4.
  • Security and access control panels, emergency and exit lighting.
  • Medical devices and mobility equipment needing reliable spill-proof power.
  • Off-grid solar and energy storage, where deep cycle gel and tubular gel ranges extend service life.
  • Telecom, utility and signalling standby for air, rail and sea infrastructure.

Service life and expectations

Under normal operating conditions, four or five years of dependable service life can be expected from Power-Sonic SLA batteries in standby applications, or between 200 and 1000 charge and discharge cycles depending on the average depth of discharge. Batteries can be charged and discharged in any orientation except upside down without any reduction in performance. Special separators, advanced plate composition and a balanced electrolyte system improve the ability to recover from excessively deep discharge, which is a common cause of premature failure in cheaper cells. The tubular gel range delivers a cycle life close to three times that of the standard Solar SLA range, making it one of the most economically viable options over the life of an off-grid solar system.

Frequently asked questions

How long do sealed lead acid batteries last?

In standby applications Power-Sonic SLA batteries typically deliver four to five years of dependable service life under normal operating conditions. In cyclic use they last between 200 and 1000 charge and discharge cycles, depending on the average depth of discharge. Cooler operating temperatures and shallow discharge extend life, while heat and deep discharge shorten it.

Can sealed lead acid batteries be mounted on their side?

Yes. Power-Sonic valve regulated SLA batteries are spill-proof and can be operated in any position, including on their side, and can be charged and discharged in any orientation except upside down without any reduction in performance.

Do sealed lead acid batteries need ventilation?

Under normal charging the sealed valve-regulated design recombines gases internally, so heavy ventilation is not required as it is for flooded batteries. Some ventilation is still good practice in enclosed cabinets, because the one-way relief valves can vent a small amount of gas during severe overcharge.

Are sealed lead acid batteries dangerous goods?

Power-Sonic SLA batteries are non-spillable and are approved for transport by air with D.O.T., I.A.T.A. and F.A.A. certification, which makes them straightforward to ship compared with flooded types. Lithium iron phosphate models are subject to separate lithium battery transport rules.

How do I charge a 12V sealed lead acid battery?

Use a charger designed for AGM VRLA batteries set to the manufacturer's recommended float and cyclic voltages. Power-Sonic supplies matched chargers for its range. Avoid overcharging and excessive heat, and avoid deep discharge where possible to preserve cycle life.

Which Power-Sonic battery do I need for my UPS?

Match the voltage, capacity in amp-hours, terminal type and physical dimensions of your existing battery, and the number in series that your UPS requires. If you are unsure, send us your UPS model or the part number printed on the current battery and Indigi Power and Cooling will confirm the correct Power-Sonic equivalent.
