A three phase UPS installation is a switchboard project as much as an equipment project: it requires dedicated input and output submains, a wrap-around maintenance bypass so the system can be serviced without dropping the load, external battery cabinets, and load bank commissioning to prove capacity before the real load is transferred onto it.

What actually takes the time

The UPS isthe easy part

Nobody books a three phase UPS install because they are worried about lifting the cabinet into place. The complexity lives upstream and downstream of it: whether the switchboard has the capacity and the physical space, how the load gets transferred without an outage, and how you prove the system works before you trust it with a data hall.

A typical three phase job involves a new input submain sized for the UPS and its battery charging current, an output submain to a dedicated critical distribution board, a maintenance bypass arrangement, earthing and fault loop verification, and battery cabinets that frequently weigh more than the UPS itself. Where a generator is involved, the interface and the transfer sequence need designing rather than assuming.

The other constraint is that these sites usually cannot go dark. Most of our three phase work is retrofit into a live environment, which means a staged cutover, temporary supplies or bypass work, and windows scheduled at times nobody enjoys working. That is planned at site inspection, not improvised on the day.

Modular systems sit between the two. A single cabinet holds several hot-swappable power modules, so capacity can be added later and a failed module replaced without shutting the frame down. The Liebert EXM in the photograph above is this arrangement: individual power modules stacked in one frame, each removable while the system stays online.

The installation consequence is worth knowing before you specify. Modular frames are usually cheaper to expand and simpler to service, but the frame is sized at purchase, so the capacity ceiling is fixed on day one. Parallel systems cost more to install because of the tie cabinet and cable matching, but the ceiling is higher.

Maintenancebypass

If there is one thing worth insisting on at design stage, it is this. Without it, every future service visit means an outage.

A maintenance bypass, sometimes called a wrap-around bypass, is external switchgear that lets the load be fed directly from mains while the UPS is completely isolated. It is not the same as the internal static bypass, which keeps the UPS energised and cannot be used to work on the unit safely.

Sites without one face an unpleasant choice every time the UPS needs a battery change, a capacitor replacement or a firmware update: take an outage, or defer the work. Deferring the work is what people actually do, which is how UPS systems end up with five-year-old batteries and no one willing to test them.

Retrofitting a bypass later is possible but costs considerably more than installing one at the outset, because the switchboard work has to be done around a live load. If you are installing a three phase UPS now, put the bypass in now.

Load bank commissioning

A three phase UPS should never meet its real load for the first time in production. A load bank applies a controlled artificial load so the system can be taken to full capacity, held there, and failed deliberately, before anything valuable depends on it.

Cutover method statement

How the load moves onto the new system without an outage, what temporary supplies or bypass arrangements are needed, which windows require out of hours work, and what the rollback is if something does not go to plan.

Switchboard and submain works

Input and output submains sized for load plus battery charging, protective device coordination, maintenance bypass installation, earthing and bonding, labelling and schedules updated.

Equipment installation

UPS frame and battery cabinets positioned with service clearances, parallel tie cabinet and matched cabling on redundant systems, battery strings assembled and torqued to specification.

Commissioning and load bank testing

What is a three phase UPS?

A three phase UPS takes a three phase supply, typically 400V between phases in Australia, and is used where the critical load is too large for a single phase system or where the building supply is already three phase. Capacities start around 10kVA and run into multiple megawatts. Some units accept three phase input and deliver single phase output, which is a common arrangement in the 10 to 40kVA band.

How much does three phase UPS installation cost in Australia?

Indigi Power and Cooling installs three phase UPS systems from $3,200 ex GST for smaller systems up to about 40kVA, and from $6,500 ex GST for medium capacity to around 200kVA. Larger and multi-module systems are quoted after a site inspection. It is the difference between believing a UPS will carry the facility and knowing it will.

How long does a three phase UPS installation take?

Three to five days on site is typical, extending where switchboard modification, a new submain or a staged cutover is required. The equipment placement is rarely the constraint. Switchboard works, cable routes and the number of interruption windows the site can tolerate are what set the programme, which is why the cutover method is agreed at inspection rather than on the day.

What is the difference between N+1 and a modular UPS?

N+1 parallel redundancy means two or more complete UPS modules share the load through a tie cabinet, so any one can fail or be serviced with no loss of protection. A modular UPS holds several hot-swappable power modules inside one frame, giving similar resilience with simpler installation, but the frame fixes the capacity ceiling at purchase. Parallel systems cost more to install because of the tie cabinet and matched cabling, and are used where the ceiling needs to be higher.

Can a three phase UPS be installed without downtime?

In most cases, with planning. Where a maintenance bypass exists the load can be transferred onto it and the work done live. On retrofits without one, we install temporary supplies or a temporary bypass and stage the cutover, scheduling the brief transfer windows out of hours. The method statement, including a rollback plan, is agreed before work starts.
