UPS installation in Australia is licensed electrical work whenever the unit is hardwired, and it has two distinct stages: installation, which is the physical placement and electrical connection, and commissioning, which is the testing that proves the system will actually carry the load when the mains fail.

The distinction that matters
Plug-in is DIY.Hardwired is not.
Most of what is written about UPS installation describes a desktop unit: take it out of the box, connect the battery lead that was disconnected for shipping, plug it into a wall socket. That advice is correct for a 650VA tower under a desk and completely wrong for anything that protects a business.
The moment a UPS is hardwired into a distribution board rather than plugged into a GPO, it stops being an appliance and becomes fixed electrical wiring. In Australia that work must be carried out by a licensed electrical worker and certified under AS/NZS 3000. Getting that wrong is not just a compliance problem: it is an insurance problem, and in a leased building it is usually a lease problem too.
The threshold is lower than most people expect. Single phase units above roughly 3kVA are commonly hardwired, and virtually every three phase UPS is. Add a maintenance bypass, external battery cabinets, or a generator interface, and the job involves switchboard modification, dedicated circuits and earthing design well before anyone touches the UPS itself.

Plenty of UPS systems in Australia have been installed but never properly commissioned. They power up, the display looks healthy, and nobody discovers the problem until the first real outage, when the transfer fails or the batteries deliver two minutes instead of fifteen.
Commissioning is the part that proves the system works. It is also the part that produces the documentation your auditor, insurer or head contractor will eventually ask for. We do not treat it as optional, and we do not hand over a site without a signed record.

The supply your building provides, and the size of the load, decide which one you are buying. The installation work is genuinely different.
Single phase, 1 to 20kVA
Comms rooms, small server rooms, medical and dental practices, retail back of house, small office floors. Rack mounted, tower or floor standing. Below about 3kVA these are usually plug connected; above it they are hardwired to a dedicated circuit.
Three phase, 10kVA and above
Data halls, hospitals, industrial plant, telecommunications sites and government facilities. Always hardwired, usually with external battery cabinets, a wrap-around maintenance bypass and often parallel redundancy. Switchboard modification is normal rather than exceptional.
Not sure which you have
Check the main switchboard. A single phase supply has one active conductor and one main switch pole; a three phase supply has three actives. If the existing load is above about 15kVA, or the site has a generator, it is almost certainly three phase. Send us a photo of the board and we will tell you.

What moves the number: distance from the switchboard, whether a dedicated circuit already exists, floor access and lift capacity for battery cabinets, whether the work must happen out of hours, and whether the existing load can be interrupted at all. We quote fixed price after a site inspection, not on a per-hour basis.

Site inspection and load assessment
We measure the actual load rather than adding up nameplate ratings, check the switchboard for available capacity and spare ways, confirm access and floor loading for battery cabinets, and identify whether the room can take the heat the UPS will reject.
Fixed price proposal
Equipment, installation, commissioning and any switchboard works, itemised. If out of hours work or a staged cutover is needed to avoid downtime, that is priced in rather than added later.
Electrical installation
Dedicated input and output circuits, isolation and maintenance bypass, earthing and bonding, cable termination and labelling. Carried out by licensed electrical workers and certified under AS/NZS 3000.
Commissioning and load testing
Pre-energisation checks, battery string verification, transfer testing on and off battery, load testing and runtime verification at design load, alarm and comms configuration.
Handover and documentation
Certificate of electrical compliance, signed commissioning record, as-installed details, operating instructions and a recommended maintenance schedule. Everything an auditor or incoming contractor will ask for.
Ongoing maintenance
A UPS is only as good as its batteries, and batteries degrade from the day they are installed. We hand over with a maintenance schedule and can carry it out under a plan from $1,940 per year ex GST.

What is UPS installation?
UPS installation is the physical placement and electrical connection of an uninterruptible power supply: positioning the unit and any battery cabinets, running dedicated input and output circuits from the distribution board, providing isolation and maintenance bypass, and terminating and earthing the cabling. For any hardwired system it is licensed electrical work and must be certified under AS/NZS 3000. It is a separate stage from commissioning, which is the testing that proves the system carries the load.
How much does UPS installation cost in Australia?
Indigi Power and Cooling installs single phase UPS systems from $850 ex GST up to 3kVA, $1,250 from 3 to 10kVA and $1,800 from 10 to 20kVA. Three phase installation starts at $3,200 ex GST for smaller systems and $6,500 for medium capacity, with larger and multi-module systems quoted after a site inspection. Cost is driven by distance from the switchboard, whether a dedicated circuit exists, access for battery cabinets and whether the work must be done out of hours.
Do I need an electrician to install a UPS?
Yes, for any hardwired UPS. Once a unit is connected into fixed wiring rather than plugged into a general power outlet, the work is electrical installation work and in Australia must be performed by a licensed electrical worker and certified under AS/NZS 3000. Small plug-connected units below about 3kVA can be positioned and plugged in by site staff, but anything larger, anything with external battery cabinets, and every three phase system requires a licensed electrician.
What is the difference between UPS installation and commissioning?
Installation is the hardware and the wiring: getting the unit in place and connected correctly. Commissioning is the proof: pre-energisation checks, insulation resistance testing, battery string voltage and polarity verification, transfer testing on and off battery, load testing at design load, runtime verification, and alarm and communications configuration, ending in a signed commissioning record. A system can be installed correctly and still fail its first outage if it was never commissioned.
How long does a UPS installation take?
A single phase install is typically one to two days including commissioning, assuming a dedicated circuit is available. Three phase installs usually run three to five days, longer where switchboard modification, a new submain or a staged cutover is required. The variable is almost never the UPS itself: it is the electrical work upstream and how much of the existing load can be interrupted.
Can a UPS be installed without shutting down the server room?
Usually yes, but it needs planning. Where the existing load cannot be interrupted we install a temporary bypass or work from a maintenance bypass so the load stays live during changeover, and we schedule the brief transfer windows out of hours. Retrofitting into a room with no existing bypass is the harder case, and it is exactly the situation to raise at site inspection rather than on the day.
What Australian standards apply to UPS installation?
AS/NZS 3000, the wiring rules, governs the electrical installation and the compliance certificate. AS 2676 covers the installation and maintenance of stationary batteries, which matters for external battery cabinets and battery rooms. Where the UPS supports life safety or emergency systems, additional building code requirements apply. Data centre environmental conditions follow ASHRAE TC 9.9, which is why cooling and UPS design are usually considered together.
