How to read the Eaton 9PX front panel and event log
Every 9PX diagnosis starts at the front panel. The status LED gives you the headline, the audible alarm tells you the urgency, and the event log gives you the exact fault. To retrieve stored faults, press the menu button, scroll to Control or Event Log, and read the most recent entries. The 9PX stores the last several dozen events with a timestamp, which is what a technician will ask for first.

Battery faults on the Eaton 9PX
Battery conditions are the single most common reason a 9PX alarms. A Battery fault or replace battery message usually means the automatic battery test found the string voltage, capacity or impedance outside specification. On sealed lead-acid strings this typically appears at three to five years, sooner in warm rooms. A No battery detected alarm is different and is worth checking yourself first, because it is often a loose internal connector or an open external battery breaker rather than a failed pack.
Heat is the biggest driver of early battery failure. As a rule of thumb, every 8 to 10 degrees Celsius above 25 degrees can halve lead-acid battery life, which is why a 9PX in a hot comms cupboard often fails its battery test years earlier than the same unit in a cooled room. If the 9PX reports low runtime but passes its test, apply utility power for up to 48 hours to fully recharge, then re-run the test before deciding on replacement. Overload faults
An overload alarm means the connected load exceeds what the 9PX can supply. The unit tolerates moderate overloads only briefly before it transfers to bypass or shuts down to protect itself. Unplanned bypass mode
When a 9PX shows bypass mode that you did not select, it has moved your equipment onto raw mains because it could no longer support the load through the inverter. Your gear still has power, but it is no longer protected. Common triggers are an overload, an internal fault, or repeated transfers. Clear any overload, then check the event log for the underlying fault. If the unit will not return to online double-conversion after the overload is removed, treat it as an internal fault and book service rather than repeatedly forcing it back.
Overtemperature and fan faults
An overtemperature alarm means the internal heatsink or ambient sensor has passed its limit. Check that the front and rear vents are clear, that rack doors are not trapping heat, and that room cooling is working. A fan fault or fan lock means a cooling fan has seized, and because the fan is not a user-replaceable item on the 9PX, a failed fan needs a technician before the unit overheats and drops to bypass. Site wiring faults
A site wiring fault is the 9PX telling you something is wrong with the circuit feeding it, most often reversed line and neutral or a missing earth at the outlet. This is not a UPS fault and it is not user-serviceable. It must be corrected by a licensed electrician in line with AS/NZS 3000, because the wiring condition can be a genuine safety hazard. Internal, inverter and DC bus faults
Faults that reference the inverter, DC bus, relays or a generic internal fault are hard faults. They usually mean a power-stage component such as a capacitor, relay or control board is out of specification, and the unit may not be able to safely support or transfer load. Do not open the chassis. A 9PX can hold a lethal DC voltage on its bus capacitors even when isolated from mains, so these faults are always a service call. Record the exact fault text and timestamp from the event log before you power anything down, because it tells the technician which stage to inspect.
When to reset and when to call a technician
You can safely handle load and environment problems yourself: reduce an overload, clear blocked vents, reseat an external battery breaker, or arrange a licensed electrician for a wiring fault. Call a UPS technician when you see any battery fault that persists after recharging, a charger fault, a fan fault, a short circuit, or anything referencing the inverter, DC bus or an internal fault. As a simple rule, a red LED with a continuous alarm and a fault in the log is a service call, not a reset.
