UPS Systems and Data Centre Cooling -- Australia-Wide

UPS Systems, Installation and Data Centre Cooling Across Australia

Indigi Power and Cooling supplies, installs and maintains uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and CRAC precision cooling for data centres, server rooms and critical facilities across Australia. From single-phase UPS to 2MVA three-phase systems, and from CRAC units to high-density liquid cooling, we handle supply, installation, commissioning and ongoing maintenance. Indigi is an Indigenous and Veteran-owned specialist, Supply Nation and ICN Gateway registered.

Based in Brisbane and operating nationally, Indigi Power and Cooling protects mission-critical infrastructure where downtime is not an option. We deliver UPS installation, preventative maintenance, battery replacement, CRAC cooling and precision data centre cooling for government, defence, mining, healthcare, telecommunications and data centre operators across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the Pacific, all to Australian Standards including AS/NZS 3000 and AS IEC 62040.

We are one of the few Australian providers that specialise in both critical power and precision cooling, which means we design UPS and cooling as one integrated system rather than treating them as separate trades. The result is fewer gaps, cleaner commissioning and a single accountable partner for the equipment that keeps your servers online.

What is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS)?

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a device that delivers instant battery backup power the moment mains power fails, so connected equipment keeps running without interruption. A UPS switches to battery in milliseconds, protecting servers, network gear and control systems from outages, brownouts and voltage surges, and giving equipment time to keep operating or shut down safely. Indigi supplies single-phase and three-phase UPS systems from 500VA up to 2MVA, from brands including Eaton, Vertiv Liebert, APC by Schneider Electric, PowerShield and Socomec.

What is a CRAC unit?

A CRAC unit (Computer Room Air Conditioning) is a precision cooling system built for data centres, server rooms and telecommunications environments. Unlike standard air conditioning, a CRAC unit holds tight temperature and humidity tolerances, runs continuously, and removes the high sensible heat that IT equipment generates around the clock, keeping the room within the ASHRAE recommended envelope of 18 to 27 degrees Celsius. Indigi supplies and services DX, chilled water (CHW) and condenser water (CDW) CRAC systems, plus high-density liquid cooling for AI and GPU workloads.

Why reliable power and cooling matters

Every minute of unplanned downtime costs Australian businesses thousands of dollars in lost revenue, corrupted data and damaged equipment. Reliable UPS systems and precision cooling are not optional for mission-critical environments, they are the foundation of operational continuity.

  • Prevent downtime. UPS systems deliver instantaneous battery backup during outages, brownouts and voltage surges, protecting servers, communications and process control systems from interruption.
  • Protect critical infrastructure. CRAC units and precision cooling hold the tight temperature and humidity tolerances required by servers, networking and industrial control systems operating continuously.
  • Meet compliance. Regulated sectors including healthcare, government, defence and finance require documented power protection and cooling that meets Australian Standards and sector accreditation.
  • Support high-density computing. AI, GPU and high-performance computing generate far more heat per rack than standard IT loads, so integrated UPS and precision data centre cooling is essential for these environments.

Single-phase, three-phase and choosing the right UPS

The right UPS depends on your load size and how critical it is. Single-phase UPS systems suit server cabinets, network rooms, medical equipment and small comms loads, typically from 500VA to around 20kVA. Three-phase UPS systems handle whole server rooms, data halls and industrial plant, scaling from roughly 10kVA up to 2MVA and beyond in parallel and modular configurations. Above the size question sits topology. Line-interactive UPS suits smaller, less critical loads and corrects minor voltage variations efficiently. Online double-conversion UPS, the standard for data centres and mission-critical sites, continuously rebuilds a clean, isolated waveform so the load never touches raw mains, delivering the highest protection at up to around 95% efficiency in modern eco modes.

For high-density and AI environments, the power and cooling questions become inseparable. A rack loaded with GPU accelerators can draw more than 100kW and reject almost all of that as heat, which pushes both the UPS sizing and the cooling design well beyond a standard IT fit-out. This is exactly where designing UPS and cooling together pays off, and where our combined critical power and precision cooling capability sets us apart from a power-only or cooling-only contractor. We scope the electrical load, the thermal load and the redundancy strategy as one brief, then supply, install and maintain the whole system to Australian Standards.

Frequently asked questions

What is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS)?

A UPS is a device that provides instant battery backup when mains power fails, switching over in milliseconds so connected equipment keeps running. It protects against outages, brownouts and voltage surges, and gives servers time to keep operating or shut down safely.

How long does a UPS last?

A UPS unit typically lasts 8 to 12 years, but its batteries are the limiting factor and usually need replacement every 3 to 5 years depending on type and room temperature. On battery, runtime is deliberately short, often 5 to 15 minutes, which is enough to ride through a brief outage or trigger a generator or safe shutdown.

What size UPS system do I need?

UPS sizing depends on the total power draw of your equipment in watts or kVA, the runtime you need, and whether the load is single or three-phase. As a rule, total the wattage of everything to be protected and add 20 to 25% headroom for growth and inrush. Our team can run a full load assessment, or you can start with our UPS runtime and battery calculator.

How often should a UPS be serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend annual preventative maintenance as a minimum. A service covers battery impedance testing, thermal imaging of connections, transfer testing, firmware checks and cleaning. Mission-critical sites in healthcare, data centres or mining often require more frequent servicing under compliance frameworks.

What is a CRAC unit?

A CRAC unit (Computer Room Air Conditioning) is a precision cooling system for data centres and server rooms. Unlike standard air conditioning, it holds tight temperature and humidity tolerances, runs continuously, and handles the high sensible heat of IT equipment, keeping the room within the ASHRAE 18 to 27 degrees Celsius envelope.

Do I need both a UPS and a CRAC cooling system?

In most server rooms and data centres, yes. A UPS protects your power but generates heat itself, and without adequate cooling, battery life drops and room temperatures can exceed safe limits within minutes of a cooling failure. UPS and CRAC are complementary, one protects your power and the other protects your temperature, which is why Indigi designs them as one integrated system.
