End of life boards / Capacity upgrades / Compliance
Most boards are not replaced because they failed. They are replaced because nobody can safely add one more circuit.

A switchboard upgrade replaces or rebuilds an existing board that has reached the end of its serviceable life, run out of capacity, or no longer meets current safety requirements, typically because it lacks residual current device protection or safe access to live parts.
Indigi Power and Cooling designs, supplies and installs commercial and industrial switchboard upgrades across Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold Coast, staged to keep the site running where the operation cannot take a full shutdown. Often identified during switchboard maintenance and thermal imaging. Call 1800 046 344.
When to upgrade
How to tell maintenanceis no longer the answer
There is a point where servicing an old board stops being economical, and it is usually obvious once someone names it.
The common triggers: no residual current device protection on circuits that now require it. Obsolete protective devices that cannot be sourced, so a failed breaker means a scavenged part or a dead circuit. Rewirable fuses still in service. No spare ways, so every new circuit becomes a tandem breaker or a sub board bolted to the wall beside it. Exposed live parts or missing shrouding that make any work inside the board hazardous. Asbestos containing panels, which are still out there in buildings of a certain age. Repeated thermal imaging findings on the same busbar or section, which usually means the problem is the board, not the joint.
Any one of those is worth a conversation. Two or three together and you are maintaining something that should be replaced.
Keeping the site live
Staging the workaround your operation
The reason switchboard upgrades get deferred for years is rarely the cost of the board. It is the assumption that the building has to go dark for a weekend, and for a lot of sites that is simply not possible.
It is usually avoidable. Where the installation allows, we build the new board offsite, install it alongside the existing one, and transfer circuits in stages so only a small part of the site is affected at any point. Temporary supplies cover anything that cannot drop. On sites with critical loads we can run those on temporary or uninterruptible supply through the changeover.
Where a shutdown genuinely is required we scope it precisely, agree the window well ahead, and plan it to the hour, with the board pre built and tested so site time is installation rather than assembly. Our critical power work is largely about moving live loads without dropping them, which is the same problem in a different cabinet.
What you get
Scope anddocumentation
Design and load assessment, so the new board is sized for what the site actually draws now and can take sensible future expansion rather than being full the day it is commissioned. Supply of the board built to current standards. Installation, circuit transfer and testing. Full compliance documentation and certification.
Updated schedules and labelling that match reality, which is frequently the single biggest practical improvement for whoever maintains the building afterwards. Where it makes sense we fit metering or monitoring during the upgrade, because the board is open and it is far cheaper than retrofitting later.
The new board goes straight onto a maintenance interval. A board is at its best on the day it is commissioned and starts degrading immediately, so the first thermal scan at the next load peak is worth doing.

Manufacturing, logistics and defence support. Growing fast and thinly served by specialist maintenance contractors.
Gold Coast and Yatala
Southport, Bundall, Robina, Varsity Lakes, Burleigh, Nerang, Molendinar, Yatala, Ormeau, Coomera
Salt air and humidity shorten service intervals on coastal plant, particularly condenser coils and outdoor switchgear.
Logan, Redlands and Bayside
Logan Central, Meadowbrook, Crestmead, Slacks Creek, Berrinba, Capalaba, Cleveland, Wynnum, Manly
Warehousing, cold storage and aged care. Sits between our Brisbane and Gold Coast runs, which keeps scheduled visits efficient.
Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast
North Lakes, Brendale, Strathpine, Caboolture, Narangba, Caloundra, Maroochydore, Kawana, Noosa
Run on a scheduled route rather than ad hoc, which keeps travel out of the price. Best suited to quarterly or six monthly cycles.
Toowoomba and the Darling Downs
Toowoomba CBD, Wilsonton, Torrington, Charlton, Oakey, Dalby, Warwick, Gatton
Agricultural processing, transport depots and regional health. Combining trades on one visit is what makes the travel work.
Questions
Switchboard upgradesfrequently asked
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Common signs are no residual current device protection on circuits that now require it, rewirable fuses still in service, obsolete breakers that cannot be sourced, no spare ways left for new circuits, exposed live parts or missing shrouding, asbestos containing panels, and repeated thermal imaging findings on the same section of board. Any one is worth assessing. Several together usually mean you are maintaining something that should be replaced.
How long does a commercial switchboard upgrade take?
Site time depends on size and staging rather than on a fixed duration. The board is built and tested offsite, so the on site work is installation and circuit transfer. A small distribution board can be a single visit. A main switchboard on a live site is usually staged across several visits so only part of the installation is affected at any time. We give a schedule with the quote rather than an open ended estimate.
Does the building have to be shut down?
Usually not entirely. Where the installation allows, the new board is installed alongside the existing one and circuits are transferred in stages, with temporary supplies covering anything that cannot drop. Critical loads can be carried on temporary or uninterruptible supply through the changeover. Where a shutdown genuinely is needed we scope it precisely and schedule it out of hours.
What does a switchboard upgrade cost?
It is driven by board size, the number of circuits to transfer, protective device specification, access, and how much staging is required to keep the site live. Staging is often the largest single variable, which is why a quote from a photograph is unreliable. We assess on site and quote a fixed price with the staging plan included.
Will the new board meet current standards?
Yes. New boards are built and installed to current requirements, including residual current device protection, appropriate fault levels, safe access to live parts and correct segregation. You receive full compliance documentation and certification, plus updated schedules and labelling that match the installed circuits.
Can you upgrade a board and keep critical equipment running?
Yes, and it is the part we are best placed to do. Our core work is maintaining uninterruptible power supplies and data centre cooling, so transferring critical loads without dropping them is familiar ground. Servers, refrigeration, medical equipment and process plant can be carried through a changeover with planning.
