What is an APC External Battery Pack?
An APC external battery pack (also called an EBM -- External Battery Module -- or XBP) is
an add-on battery cabinet designed to connect directly to a compatible APC UPS via a
dedicated battery bus connector. The UPS automatically detects the additional battery
capacity and adjusts its runtime estimate accordingly.
Using an external battery pack to extend runtime is significantly more cost-effective than
replacing a UPS with a larger unit. A correctly specified EBM can multiply the runtime of
a Smart-UPS system two to four times at the same load, without requiring any additional
electrical work or reconfiguration of connected equipment.
EBMs are available for tower, rack-mount and convertible UPS installations, in form factors
ranging from 1U to 5U. Each model is matched to specific UPS voltage and battery string
configuration -- selecting the correct EBM for your UPS model is essential.
Why Extend UPS Runtime with an External Battery Pack
The internal battery in a standard APC Smart-UPS system is sized to provide enough runtime
for a controlled shutdown -- typically 5 to 15 minutes at full load. For many applications

Can I add more than one external battery pack to my APC UPS?
Some APC Smart-UPS models support multiple EBMs daisy-chained together. The maximum number of EBMs per UPS varies by model -- check the UPS specification sheet or contact our team. Each additional EBM adds roughly the same additional runtime as the first.
Are APC external battery packs user-replaceable?
