The APC Smart-UPS electronics typically last 7 to 10 years or longer with proper maintenance. The internal VRLA batteries, however, have a much shorter service life of 2 to 4 years depending on operating conditions. Ambient temperature is the biggest factor affecting battery life. Every 8 to 10 degrees above 25 degrees Celsius can cut battery life roughly in half. In Australian conditions, especially in server rooms without adequate cooling, batteries often need replacing every 2 to 3 years rather than the 4-year maximum. The UPS itself will outlast several battery cycles. Keeping the unit in a climate-controlled environment, running annual maintenance checks, and replacing batteries on schedule will maximise the working life of the overall system.
