The gap
Anyone can sellyou the box
Search for a UPS in Papua New Guinea and you will find retailers, wholesalers and IT distributors. Several of them are very good at what they do. What you will not find is a critical power engineering business whose job is to size the system properly, commission it against the real load, come back twice a year, and hold the spares that keep it alive.
That gap is why so much of the installed base across the region is in worse condition than its owners believe. A UPS that has never been load tested will hold up on the front panel display right until the moment the grid drops and the batteries deliver forty seconds instead of fifteen minutes. A precision cooling unit that has never had its condenser coil cleaned in a coastal environment will run, expensively, at a fraction of its rated capacity until the compressor fails on a Friday afternoon.
Indigi Power and Cooling works the other way around. We are an equipment agnostic service business first. We hold accounts with Eaton, Schneider APC, Vertiv Liebert, PowerShield and Socomec, so we can supply, but the work that matters is the design, the commissioning record and the maintenance schedule that follows it. What heat costs you in battery life
Battery ageing roughly doubles in rate for every 10 degree Celsius rise above the 25 degree reference temperature. Applied to a standard five year design life valve regulated lead acid string, the numbers look like this.

The point is not that batteries fail in the tropics. It is that they fail on a schedule you can predict and plan for, provided somebody is measuring the room. Where a site cannot be cooled reliably, we look at lithium iron phosphate strings, which tolerate higher ambient temperatures far better, or at high temperature UPS systems designed for the condition from the start.
Method
How a regional project runs
Remote scoping before anyone flies
Mobilisation is the expensive part of any island project, so we do as much as possible before it. Photographs, switchboard schedules, single line diagrams, existing equipment nameplates, room dimensions and a period of load logging where the site can support it. For sites with remote monitoring already installed, we can often review the data directly. The objective is that the first visit is productive rather than investigative.
Design for the site, not the catalogue
Capacity, topology and runtime chosen against the measured load and the real ambient conditions. Double conversion online is the normal answer where the supply is unstable. Redundancy is specified honestly, because an N plus one architecture that nobody can service is worth less than a single well maintained unit. Cooling is sized for the sensible heat load with humidity control that suits the climate, and the battery space is treated as a cooling load in its own right.
Procurement, dangerous goods and freight
Getting equipment into the region is a genuine part of the engineering. Sealed lead acid batteries ship as non spillable under UN2800 with terminal protection and correct documentation. Lithium batteries fall under UN3480 and UN3481 with state of charge and packaging restrictions that in practice push anything substantial onto sea freight, which changes the programme. We plan the freight path, the customs clearance and the lead times up front so the install date is real.
Mobilisation, install and commissioning
We consolidate work so a single mobilisation covers as much as possible: install, commission, service the existing fleet, train the local team and leave spares behind. Commissioning is the same discipline we apply in Australia. Battery string voltage, polarity and torque checks, transfer testing on line to battery and back, load bank or real load testing, and runtime verification. You receive the commissioning record, not a verbal assurance.
Maintenance, spares and local capability
Two visits per year is the minimum for a site that matters, more where the environment is harsh or the load is critical. Between visits, we train site staff on first line checks, alarm interpretation and safe isolation, and we agree a critical spares list that is either held on site or reserved in Brisbane. Where remote monitoring can be installed, we watch the fleet from here so a developing fault is a scheduled visit rather than an emergency.

Do Australian UPS systems work in Papua New Guinea?
Yes. Papua New Guinea runs 240V single phase and 415V three phase at 50Hz, the same as Australia, and uses the same Type I plug pattern. Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are on equivalent supplies at 50Hz. Australian specification UPS systems, batteries and precision cooling equipment can be installed directly without conversion. The adjustments that do matter are environmental rather than electrical: temperature derating, corrosion protection and a wide input window so the unit tolerates an unstable supply without constantly transferring to battery.
Who installs and maintains UPS systems in Papua New Guinea?
Equipment is readily available in country from established distributors and IT suppliers, but ongoing critical power engineering is thinly covered. How long do UPS batteries last in a tropical climate?
Far less than the design life printed on the datasheet unless the room is genuinely cooled. Valve regulated lead acid battery ageing roughly doubles in rate for every 10 degrees Celsius above 25. A five year battery in a room averaging 30 degrees will realistically give around three and a half years, at 35 degrees around two and a half, and in an uncooled outdoor enclosure closer to eighteen months. The practical answer is to cool the battery space, verify runtime at least annually rather than trusting the front panel, and budget replacement on the real interval instead of the rated one.
What does it cost to get an engineer to a Pacific site?
Regional work is priced per mobilisation rather than per hour, because travel, accommodation and freight dominate the cost rather than labour on the tools. That means the economics improve sharply when work is consolidated. A single trip that installs a new system, services the existing fleet, replaces due batteries and trains the site team costs a fraction of four separate visits. Can you service equipment you did not supply?
Yes, and most of our regional work starts that way. We are multi vendor and hold accounts across Eaton, Schneider APC, Vertiv Liebert, PowerShield and Socomec, so we are not steering you toward a replacement in order to service you. The usual first engagement is a condition assessment across whatever is already installed, which produces a written report, a battery replacement schedule and a critical spares list before anyone talks about capital.
How do batteries get shipped into the region?
Sealed valve regulated lead acid batteries travel as non spillable batteries under UN2800, which is straightforward provided terminals are protected and the documentation is correct. Lithium batteries fall under UN3480 or UN3481, with state of charge limits and packaging requirements that in practice make sea freight the sensible path for anything of size. This is why we plan freight at design stage rather than after the order. A battery replacement programme that ignores dangerous goods lead times will miss its dates.
What cooling suits a tropical comms room?
Not a comfort split system, which is what most rooms end up with. Precision cooling units hold tight temperature and humidity tolerances, run continuously rather than cycling, and are built for a sensible heat load rather than a mix of people and sunlight. In coastal locations the specification should include coil coatings suited to a marine environment, corrosion resistant fixings and a filtration standard matched to the site. Do you work in Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu?
Yes. Papua New Guinea is where most of our regional work sits, but the same model applies across Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga and Timor-Leste. Smaller island sites often have the sharpest exposure, because a single UPS or a single cooling unit carries an entire operation with no local redundancy and no local technician. Those sites benefit most from remote monitoring and a properly stocked spares kit.
