What makes a battery a deep cycle battery

Not every sealed lead acid battery is suited to being run down and recharged over and over. A starting or standby battery is built with many thin plates to deliver a big burst of current, but those thin plates degrade quickly if the battery is deeply discharged again and again. Charging and looking after a PDC battery

Correct charging is the biggest factor in how many cycles a deep cycle AGM battery delivers. For cyclic use, the PDC Series is charged with a constant voltage in the region of 14.1 to 14.7 volts for a 12V battery at 20 degrees Celsius, with the initial current limited to a sensible fraction of capacity, then dropped to a float charge once the current tapers off so the battery is not overcharged. For standby or float service, a lower holding voltage of around 13.5 to 13.8 volts keeps the battery topped up without cooking it. As ambient temperature rises the charging voltage should be reduced, and as it falls the voltage should be increased, to avoid overcharge in the heat and undercharge in the cold.

Beyond charging, a few practices extend life. Avoid leaving the battery sitting deeply discharged, because that promotes sulphation that permanently reduces capacity. Keep the battery as cool as the installation allows, since heat accelerates ageing in every lead acid chemistry. And observe the storage guidance: a PDC battery can be held for up to about six months at 25 degrees Celsius before a freshening charge is needed, with shorter intervals in hotter conditions.
